The Science Argument
Before we do anything else, let’s define what science is. The word ‘science’ comes from the Latin word ‘scientia’, meaning “having knowledge” or “to know”. Over the last 200 years, during the scientific revolution, science has become a way of knowing or discovering the truth about the world around us.
We discover or know the truth about something by 2 methods:
–operation science or the scientific method. We perform observable, repeatable experiments in a controlled environment to find patterns of recurring behavior in the present physical universe. Because we can measure physical things, this method is almost always 100% accurate.
–origins science or the legal/historical method. We examine reliable testimony and physical evidence (like pottery, artifacts, canyons, etc.). This is knowledge about the past or things that cannot be observed, measured, recorded and repeated. Some science can be used in this method, like DNA testing, but the scientific method cannot be used. Because we cannot measure these results, this method is not 100% accurate. The only conclusion we may be able to make is only where the ‘preponderance of evidence leads us to’. When it comes to history, legal matters or the intangibles (like love, trust, etc.), this is the kind of test that we would use.
The next area we need to talk about are the different fields of science like astronomy, chemistry, physics, biology, etc. To go into each area would take way too much time here. But I will be talking about examples from two of the areas. Please check out the references for further, more specific details. One further note; while science only deals with the physical, 4-dimensional world, it doesn’t rule out other dimensions or other realities. It just cannot be used to measure them at the present time. But there is something we’ll call ‘scientism’. This is the belief that there is nothing in existence but our 4-dimensional world. That is if it doesn’t exist in our physical world, it doesn’t exist at all. The late astronomer, Carl Sagan, defined it when he said, “The cosmos is all that is or was or ever will be.” Scientism believes everything can be explained by the natural laws of physics, chemistry, etc. It doesn’t believe in or give any creedance to the supernatural or miracles. It believes everything can be explained by ‘science’. Many believers in scientism are atheists. Other words for this are ‘naturalism’ or ‘materialism’. Any conclusion that doesn’t have a naturalistic explanation is rejected even if the facts are leaning in that direction. So belief in God or an intelligent designer is rejected outright. The big problem is, how does someone like Carl Sagan know that the cosmos is all there is? To know that the cosmos is all there is, you’d have to have complete knowledge of the cosmos, which we don’t have. So this statement is self-defeating.
All scientists look at the same set of facts. The only difference is in how they interpret those facts. Here is where the difference between ‘hard evidence’ and ‘soft evidence’ comes in. Hard evidence can be observed and measured. Soft evidence uses the best available knowledge and then makes assumptions based on this limited knowledge. Hard evidence is data that is extremely reliable. Soft evidence involves assumptions or educated guesses that may or may not be true. So, it is not nearly as accurate as hard evidence. Scientists saying birds evolved from dinosaurs are using soft evidence to prove this. They’re taking the available hard evidence and extrapolating on it by making assumptions in areas where they don’t have enough hard evidence.
Now we’ll look at just two lines of reasoning:

According to astrophysicist Dr. Hugh Ross, there are 152 physical constants that are crucial for human life to exist on Earth. These range from…
– the amount of oxygen on the Earth’s atmosphere
– the right type of star that our Sun is
– the right distance that Earth is from the Sun so water is in the liquid state. This is known as the ‘habitable zone’ for planets.
– the Earth having a magnetic field which shields us from harmful radiation from the Sun.
– having the right size Moon. It stabilizes the Earth’s tilt which gives us moderate temperatures. It also helps the ocean tides be bearable as they move minerals around.
– having an ozone layer in the upper atmosphere which protects us from solar radiation that would fry our brains in seconds.

The probability of all of these 152 physical constants happening by chance is one chance in 10282 power. That’s one chance in 1 followed by 282 zeros. Remember if you don’t have one chance in 1053power, it will NEVER happen. It is IMPOSSIBLE! One chance in 1054 power is 10 times impossible. One chance in 10282 power is beyond comprehension impossible. So, the universe is so fine tuned for human life, there’s no way it could have happened by random chance. It had to be fine tuned by an intelligent designer who specifically made it for us humans.
2)…our body is made up of 75 trillion cells with about 210 different cell types. The smallest size cell is about 1/50,000 of an inch. You could fit 250,000 of these cells in the period at the end of this sentence. Scientists used to think a cell was a very simple unit. They now know that this ‘simple’ cell is far more complicated structurally than the most advanced factory in the world. There are so many different parts that must come together at the right time and in the right place. Many of these parts have to be specifically either right or left handed to work. If even one molecule is in the wrong place at the wrong time or is the wrong ‘handed’ one, the whole unit won’t function. Here are some things to consider:
– each cell is surrounded by a membrane thinner than a spider’s web that must function properly, or the cell will die.
– each cell generates its own electric field, which at times is larger than a high voltage power line.
– each cell contains ATP, the body’s main energy source. It converts food into energy. Each of the hundreds of these ATP motors is 200,000 times smaller than a pinhead. It has a wheel that turns at 100 revolutions per second. Your body contains hundreds of trillions of these motors. Nothing we have ever created comes close to these motors in performance, durability and size.
– each of these are made by instructions from your DNA. DNA is made from proteins, which are made from amino acid chains and nucleotides. There are 80 different amino acid types but only 20 of these are relevant to cell life.
– amino acids are produced in equal quantities of right and left handed varieties, but only left handed ones can be used in DNA.
– nucleotides are produced in right and left handed varieties also but only right handed ones can be used in DNA.
This brings up only a few of the many obvious questions;
– how could any specific left or right handed component know when to arrive at the right place at the right time?
– how would all the components randomly know how to assemble properly?
– where would the information for the cells to work together come from in the first place?
– what would initially energize ‘life’?
All of this does the following depending on what type of cell is produced and how it combines with other cells:
– each neuron has about 100,000 branching fibers connecting it with other neurons.
– there are about 100,000,000,000 (one hundred billion) neurons in your brain.
– your nose can differentiate 10,000 different smells.
– your ear has over 100,000 motion detecting hair cells that allow you to maintain balance & motion.
– your ear has over 1,000,000 (one million) moving parts.
– in your eye’s retina, there are 120,000,000 (one hundred twenty million) rods for dim, night & peripheral vision and 7,000,000 (seven million) cones for color & detail vision.
– your brain has the capacity to store the amount of information in 25 million books. There are only about 20 million books in the entire Library of Congress.
– your brain makes about a thousand trillion computations per second.
All of the above and much, much more comes from just one tiny DNA molecule that somehow knew exactly how to build and maintain your body for about 80 years. This is vastly more complex than all of the manufacturing factories in the entire world. How many of us walking into one of these factories would assume that it assembled itself by chance? Yet there are some scientists who think just that.

More scientists are coming to believe every month, as they discover more about molecular biology.
